Good news. There are three vaccines available, Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine or the two-dose series made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. Bad news. Who do you have to know to get the shot? At 56, I was prepared to wait…and wait…and wait. With a population of 39.5M, California is the most populated state in the nation. Heck, if it was a country it’d be the 11th largest. I get it, distribution was going to a nightmare. But what about my 76-year-old, high risk mother in Missouri? Why can’t I get her signed up?!! I’ve subscribed her to over seven websites. Made twenty phone calls. Sent text message galore. I’ve become obsessed trying to get her the vaccine from long … [Read more...]
Somebody Feed Joan – One Mom’s Food Talk

Before the pandemic, my mother and I talked about the latest literary books, my daughter’s upcoming nuptials and the health of various relatives. But lately, our conversations are mainly Food Talk. We speak on the phone or FaceTime daily. Conversations run from five minutes to an hour. But through it all, the core of our conversation is food talk. Lunch Food Talk I think I’m going to go mad. If I call in the afternoon, I imagine her sitting on the living room recliner, frantically searching for the portable phone. It’s time to talk about lunch. Here’s a little sample. “Hi mom. How are you doing?” “I’m fine,” she says. “Did you eat yet?” “Yep.” “What’d you … [Read more...]
Wine Tasting For Dummies – That’s All of Us!

What do we really know about wine tasting? Apparently nothing! Take it from four Wall Street businessmen who ordered a $2000 bottle of wine at swanky Balthazar in New York City and ended up drinking and bursting into joy over an $18 bottle. The story goes on to say that a young couple next to them had ordered the $18 wine and were unknowingly served the more expensive bottle. Just deserts you might say? (You may think one who was punished got their 'just desserts' based on how it sounds, but the correct spelling and has only one 's' as in 'just deserts.') Four Wall Street businessmen ordered a $2000 bottle of wine This got me thinking. Do any of us really understand wine? How do we … [Read more...]
Reasons I Hate Marie Kondo and You Should Too

By now, you’ve heard of Marie Kondo and her decluttering techniques. She’s perfected the art of tidying up and I hate her. She’s everywhere, bookstores, television, YouTube, Instagram, touting her own version of tidying up, which focuses on thanking your trash before you throw it away. What?!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZfn_O4BiJ4 She’s forced Americans to rethink everything we’ve ever thought about clutter. But don’t let her charming personality fool you one bit. Behind that happy, smiley face, I sense a smug attitude. She’s out to make you feel like crap about your lifestyle. Marie Kondo, you think you’ve figured out how to bring Americans joy? Think … [Read more...]

How Long to Microwave 25-lb Turkey Prank

Millennials, you think you’re so funny. “How Long Would It Take To Microwave a 25-lb Turkey” prank rolled through Internet this week, tricking your parents, Baby Boomers and Generation Xers. We willingly fell into the trap. After all, we’re guilty of protecting our Millennials from having to do anything more difficult than set the table on Thanksgiving. For most, this would be their first time to attempt to cook the mother of all birds, the turkey. We never suspected their question was not genuine. According to Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennials Millennials, also known as Generation Y or Gen Y, are the generational demographic cohort following Generation X and … [Read more...]
Happy Halloween – Get Out The Map

Sometimes you meet a person and you just click. I knew within minutes that I was going to be friends with Regina Stoops, whether she liked it or not. Maybe it was because we had shared the same sense of humor or the fact that she was just plain fun to be around. That was over two years ago. Since then, we have raised money for charity through stand-up at venues throughout the East Bay, including Tommy T’s in Pleasanton and the Bankhead Arts Center in Livermore. Soon we discovered that we had similar goals too. She wanted to turn elements of her stand-up routines into a book. I wanted to give stand-up a shot, using my humorous short stories as material. Today I want to share her writing … [Read more...]
