The Getty Museum called for people to recreate works of art while in quarantine – and they did not disappoint. They asked its followers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to remake famous pieces from its collection. “We challenge you to recreate a work of art with objects (and people) in your home,” the museum wrote.
- Choose your favorite artwork
- Find three things lying around your house⠀
- Recreate the artwork with those items
The Getty Museum challenged you to dig into Getty’s online collections and re-create artworks with objects at home, inspired by the Instagram account @tussenkunstenquarantaine aka “Between Art and Quarantine,” and boy did you deliver. According to Getty Museum, “We can’t pick favorites — we’ve seen thousands of amazing creations. Here are just a few to lift your spirits, wherever you are in the world.” #BetweenArtandQuarantine #Tussenkunstenquarantaine
My mom accepted the challenge instantly. She poked around for items at home to use. She discovered an heirloom tablecloth and that got her creative juices flowing. After a quick Internet search she found the picture she imagined, Mary Cassatt, Spanish Dancer Wearing a Lace Mantilla, 1873, oil on canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Who’s Mary Cassatt?
Mary Cassatt spent a few months in Spain in the early 1870s. She went first to Madrid, where she copied the paintings of the Spanish masters, then established a studio in Seville. She made a series of paintings of Spanish life that emphasized the beauty and dress of the local women. This piece was exhibited at the 1874 Paris Salon under the title Ida, where it attracted the attention of French impressionist Edgar Degas. On seeing the work of Cassatt for the first time, Degas commented, “C’est vrai. Voilá quelqu’un qui sent comme moi” (It is true. There is someone who feels as I do).
I messaged Getty weeks ago with my mother’s masterpiece. Great news! I heard back yesterday from the Getty Museum!
