I am excited to announce that I am one of the featured artist participating in the “We Can” art exhibit and auction to benefit the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
Thirty artists involved with Las Positas Community College created fantastic canned food paintings to benefit the hungry. Our fearless leader, Bill Paskewitz, visual arts coordinator, envisioned the idea. Bill will be retiring June 1, 2015 after 28 years of teaching at the college.
We invite the public to view our art at the college October 1-31 and bid online at Bidding for Good. The community is encouraged to bring canned food donations to the exhibit. Read on for more information.
“We Can” Art Exhibit at Las Positas College to Benefit Alameda County Community Food Bank
ART AUCTION
Starting on October 1, 2014, the Art Department at Las Positas College will auction artwork created by current and former students and faculty. The “We Can” exhibit features a collection of paintings that depict canned food. The proceeds from the sale of these paintings and donated canned food will benefit the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
All paintings are on 24″x24″x 3/4″ canvases donated by the Las Positas College Foundation.
The exhibit can be viewed in person October 1 through 30 at the art gallery of the Barbara F. Mertes Center for the Arts at Las Positas College, 3000 Campus Hill Drive Livermore. Admission is free but there is a $2.00 parking fee.
Give a little and get a lot in return
According to the Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACFB) one-in five county residents—or 311,000 individuals—receives food assistance from its food bank, according to a 2014 report by Feeding America. The Food Bank provides food to people throughout the county, including the Tri-Valley, where both Open Heart Kitchen and the Tri-Valley Haven Food Pantry obtain food from the ACFB. You can learn more about ACFB and make donations at http://www.accfb.org.
WE INVITE YOU TO VIEW OUR ART
The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, October 1, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Barbara F. Mertes Center for the Arts Center on Las Positas College Campus, 3000 Campus Hill Drive, Livermore. You will have an opportunity to view the paintings and bring canned food donations to the gallery.
The closing reception will be Thursday, October 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., when the paintings will be awarded to our generous auction winners.
In addition, the exhibit and gallery are open to the public when the college is in session and during performances at the Mertes Performing Arts Center. Admission to the gallery is free, but there is a $2.00 charge for parking on campus.
“Feast your eyes on the paintings in the gallery or enjoy them on the internet, if you can’t get to the gallery,” says Bill Paskewitz, who heads the Las Positas College Art Department. “As artists, we believe that art nourishes the soul, but the sale of these paintings will also nourish hungry people in Alameda County. This is an interesting exhibit because the artists have depicted the canned-food theme in a variety of styles and mediums”
