HOW TO ADD MORE HUMOR TO YOUR SPEAKING (AND BECOME A STAND-UP COMIC)
Stephanie Chandler: Hello everyone and welcome to the Teleseminars series of the Nonfiction Authors Association. I’m really excited about our event today with Stacey Gustafson, How to Inject More Humor in Your Speaking and Become a Stand-Up Comic. I’m your host Stephanie Chandler.
Stephanie: Thrilled to introduce our guest today. Stacey Gustafson is a comedian, inspirational speaker and Amazon #1 bestselling author of Are You Still Kidding Me?. Her short stories have appeared in Chicken Soup for the Soul and other online and print publications. She performs stand-up throughout the East Bay, CA and lives in Pleasanton, CA You can visit her popular blog at blog at StaceyGustafson.com. Stacey, thank you so much for joining us.
Stacey Gustafson: Thanks for having me.
Tell us about your journey to becoming a stand-up comic
Stephanie: Can you start by telling us about your journey to becoming a stand-up comic?
Stacey: Thanks for asking. It’s been about 50 years in the making. About ten years ago, in between picking my kids up from sports and making dinner, I started writing down funny thoughts and jokes in a notebook. It was a release, a way to find the funny in life. I turned these into short stories, joined a writing group and published my first book, Are You Kidding Me?
Then I thought, “I can dream bigger!” If I can write jokes, why not tell them? I saw Tim Allen at a comedy club 25 years ago with my husband and wondered, “What’s it feel like having the full attention of an audience?” It planted a seed in my mind. So, around 50, after my kids left the nest, I put stand-up comedy on the top of my bucket list. I went to local Comedy Club, brought all my friends and won Best Comic at Open Mic Night, $25.

Now I do stand up for worthy causes with two other comedians. I combine humor with parenting stories. I think people find my stories relatable.
Stephanie: That is such an inspiring story, especially for our writing community. They are looking at leaving their corporate jobs and finally doing something they always wanted to do.
I think many of us have a sense of humor, but don’t really know how to develop it on-command. What are some of the basic fundamentals of comedy?
