Need to Binge Watch? Good, Better, Best Picks for Summer

Need to Binge Watch? Stacey GustafsonLooking for a thrilling TV series to Binge Watch this summer? Friends have asked me, “What are you binge watching right now?” so I’ve selected my top eight picks that will hook you in the first few minutes. Many open with a graphic murder then begin the chase for the killer. If you’re against the graphic violence, I suggest you stick it out through the second episode. All these shows have unpredictable endings with intense plot lines to keep you watching for many seasons.

The Sinner – Best to Binge Watch

A crime thriller about a young mother who commits a public act of violence and the investigator who attempts to learn why.

Stacey’s Ranking: Best – This is one of my favorite miniseries. Jessica Biel performance makes it worth watching. Many episodes are extremely graphic in nature, definitely R rated content.

Genre: Drama

Cast: Jessica Biel, Bill Pullman, Christopher Abbott, Dohn Norwood

The Killing – Best to Binge Watch

This adaptation of a Danish-TV hit crime drama brings an addictive brand of whodunit from Scandinavia all the way to Seattle, where workaholic homicide detective Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) is assigned to the murder of teenager Rosie Larsen (Katie Findlay). As evidence slowly turns up, Linden drifts further and further from a plan to retire to California with her fiancé, while the grief felt by Rosie’s parents and family is shown at heartbreaking length.

Stacey’s Ranking: Best – The development of each main character makes this series impossible to turn off. Once we watched the first episode, we stayed up for two more. I recommended it to a friend and she staying in her pajamas all weekend binge watching. You are pulled in by the who-done-it.

Genre: Drama

Cast: Mireille EnosBill CampbellJoel Kinnaman

The Fall – Better to Binge Watch

“The Fall” is a crime drama that follows an investigation into a series of murders involving young business women in Belfast, Ireland. Season 1 begins with Metro Police Superintendent Detective Stella Gibson (played by Gillian Anderson) heading up a group of local detectives determined to track down a serial killer by the name of Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) before he has a chance to strike again.

Stacey’s Ranking: Better – Best part of the show, Gillian Anderson. Then we can’t forget about Jamie Dornan, the hottie from 50 Shades of Gray. This provocative series is filled with unending tension.

Genre: Drama

Cast: Archie PanjabiGillian AndersonJamie Dornan

The Night Of – Best to Binge Watch

The crime-drama series delves deeply into the intricate story of a murder case, its investigation and the subsequent trial. Naz (Riz Ahmed) is a college student living in New York who, after a night of sex and drugs, wakes up next to a dead woman with no recollection of what happened. The police later find the murder weapon in his pocket, so he is arrested and sent to Rikers Island. The rest of the first season follows several plot lines all linked to the murder case

Stacey’s Ranking: Best – This series was surprisingly mesmerizing. It’s name, The Night Of, really threw me off. It opens with a big murder scene that’s gritty and graphic. However, the character development will get you locked in. Sadly, it’s only two seasons.

Genre: Drama

Cast: Riz Ahmed, John Turturro, Michael Kenneth, Bill Camp

Five Days – Better to Binge Watch

While buying flowers at a roadside stand, a mother disappears, leaving her two young children waiting in her car. Soon, the kids set off to find their mother, but they go missing as well, and an epic police investigation ensues. HBO and BBC team up for this gripping miniseries, which depicts the saga on five separate days throughout the search.

Stacey’s Ranking: Better – This series is short enough to finish over one weekend, only one season. It’s like watching your favorite novel being reenacted on screen.

Genre: DocumentaryHorrorMystery & Suspense

Cast: David Oyelowo, Hugh Bonneville

Marcella – Good to Binge Watch

Series 1 sees DS Marcella Backland back with the police force after 11 years as the Grove Park Killer returns. The case began in 2005 and with Marcella’s previous suspect out of prison, she is led to him once again.

Stacey’s Ranking: Good – Netflix recommended I watch this one based on my previous views. Two seasons only. You’ll care about the main character immediately and root for her as she gets closer to catching the killer as her own family falls apart.

Genre: Mystery & Suspense

Cast: Nicholas Pinnock, Nina Sosanya, Ray Panthaki, Harry Lloyd

Rectify – Good to Binge Watch

A convict who spent 19 years on death row is released and must reindoctrinate himself into society and reacquaint himself with his family in a small Georgia town. His efforts to make a new life won’t be easy, as the politician who was instrumental in putting him behind bars makes it his business to see that he gets sent back to jail.

Stacey’s Ranking: Good – Rectify will not be for everybody. It’s a dark, emotional series that moves at a snail’s pace. You’ll care about Daniel Holden, the main character, right off the bat and want to uncover the truth surrounding his jail sentence.

Genre: Drama

Starring: Aden YoungAbigail SpencerJ. Smith-Cameron

Broadchurch – Better to Binge Watch

The death of a young boy sparks a complex murder investigation that puts a entire town, its residents and its secrets under a national spotlight. Local police officer Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) is begrudgingly teamed up with shady newcomer D.I. Alec Hardy (David Tennant) on the tense case. And it’s not long before she is forced to look at her own community in a whole new, disturbing, light.

Stacey’s Ranking: Better – David Tennant and Olivia Colman make a believable team in this well-written murder mystery by BBC America. The whole community is under investigation in this who-done-it.

Genre: Drama

Cast: Olivia Colman, David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Vicky McClure, Arthur Darvill

About staceygustafson

  1. Ugh. Not a binge watcher. Also, not into the scary stuff. (read: total wimp) Although I have watched more than two episodes back to back of The Golden Girls on Hallmark Channel. Does that count?

    • staceygustafson says

Yes, I know your television preferences and this list is out of your wheelhouse. And Golden Girls does not count!

  2. Oh some of these look good! Thanks for the list 🙂
